Evictions perpetuate inequality here in Cape Town. They disproportionately impact disadvantaged and marginalized populations, especially those living in informal settlements. They frequently happen illegally, not following the processes laid out by South African law to protect people and the places they call home. Few incidences of community-wide removals have gotten elevated to the national news, while the stories of the hundreds of people evicted annually throughout the city remain largely untold. This tool was created to capture important information regarding evictions and threats of evictions across the city of Cape Town, and to elevate the voices of the people unlawfully removed from their homes. The data collected will prove the scale of the injustice while also capturing the personal accounts of the individuals that make up these numbers.
